Spring/Fall 2023

Summer 2024

  • Manfred H.M. van Dulmen becomes Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs
  • Provost van Dulmen and Renique T. Kersh, Vice President of Student Affairs, named Chair and Vice Chair of strategic planning

Fall 2024

September 2024 — Steering Committee formed

October 2024 — Strategic planning Guiding Principles, framework, and timeline developed

November 2024

December 2024 — President Valerie Sheares Ashby shares her vision for UMBC at Fall Gathering; defines institutional core values; responds to strategic priority areas

Spring 2025

January 2025 — Visioning Event where Key Partners affirm mission, vision, and values; draft strategic priority areas and goals

January – March 

  • Faculty/staff/students/alumni/external partners provide feedback on priority areas and goals via community engagement events (active and passive)
  • Steering Committee finalizes priority areas and goals
  • Call for Working Group members/co-chairs

March – May 

  • Departments/Divisions map current initiatives to strategic priority areas and goals for Steering Committee review
  • Form Working Groups

Summer 2025

June – August 

  • Steering Committee develops the new strategic plan; they iterate on the plan; develop KPIs a process to assess the planning cycle.
  • Steering Committee prepares the fall launch of the Call for Proposals (CFP) for new strategic initiatives

Fall 2025

  • Introduce the new Strategic Plan with current initiatives, knowing ones will be added from the Call For Proposals
  • Send the Call for Proposals for new strategies and tactics to support the strategic plan
  • Working Groups vet proposals

Spring 2026 and Beyond

January 2026 — Proposals selected and announced. These are incorporated into the strategic plan with time horizons.

Beyond — Share a university-wide process to sustain annual planning tied to assessment and resource allocation to facilitate institutional prioritization and renewal.
