Engaging the Community

Community input is essential, and we will be including the broad UMBC community in a variety of ways throughout the strategic planning process. Here are a few examples of engagement that are already informing the work.

UMBC Bold Conversations

UMBC Bold: Campus Conversations was a series of listening sessions held in the spring of 2023 that invited the broad UMBC community to share their perspectives on the state of the university and to reflect on its future potential. More than 1,000 participants attended 22 sessions that focused on a breadth of topics, including: the academic experience, our research enterprise, partnerships, governance, and other areas that impact students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

Values Survey

A Core Values Survey was administered to the UMBC campus community in November 2024 to learn what it most valued. Results show consistency with what leadership learned from the Bold Conversations, particularly around the shared values of inclusive excellence, student success, academic excellence, community engagement, and an innovation mindset. Over 1,000 individuals accessed the survey and 789 provided responses.

Middle States Self Study

UMBC’s accreditation process by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) requires a self study — a campus-wide initiative promoting diverse reflection and dialogue on UMBC’s priorities. This was conducted in concert with ongoing institutional strategic planning, so that the two processes synergistically contribute to both a thoughtful Self-Study and a forward-thinking, achievable strategic plan for UMBC’s future.
